The structure is represented as H₂C=CHR where R represents a functional group such as a hydrocarbon or halogen. The vinyl group is also at the core of all allyl groups.

Its etymology is from Latin vinum = "wine", because of its relationship with alcohol (in its original sense of ethyl alcohol).

Polyvinyl chloride - PVC - is made by polymerization of the monomer vinyl chloride (chloroethene) CH₂=CHCl
Polyvinyl alcohol - PVA - made by polymerization of vinyl acetate and then hydrolysis of the polyvinyl acetate. (Not by polymerization of the monomer vinyl alcohol or ethenol, which is a keto-enol tautomer of acetaldehyde.)
