First started in 1961, Memorex is an electronics company. Formerly known as Memorex Telex, the company started by first selling data backup tapes, and then later audio tapes and video tapes. In the 1970s, Ella Fitzgerald immortalized the Memorex brand with a series of famous commercials. In the commercials she would sing a note that shattered a glass while being recorded to a Memorex cassette tape. The tape was played back and the recording also broke the glass, asking "Is it live, or is it Memorex?" Some Memorex 8-track tape sleeves would bear the slogan "Memory Excellence" repeated several times, dropping a letter on each line until the result was simply "Memorex." Memorex currently specializes in recordable media, flash storage, computer accessories and other electronics. Timeline
