  • Many computers and operating systems implement some form of address mapping or page mapping, that automatically translates addresses from the address space of a computer process to actual addresses in real or virtual memory.
  • Similarly cache mapping translates process addresses to locations in the cache memory of a processor.
  • The technique of memory mapping allows convenient access to a peripheral device by means of memory read/write operations. (See also memory-mapped I/O.)
  • Through network mapping one can obtain a visual or textual description of a computer network.
  • Peripheral devices are assigned names or letters through device mapping.
