A content filter is software or a combination of hardware and softwarethat blocks unwanted Internet content. While most content filters primarily filter web page and HTTP, many can be configured to filter other requests, such as instant messaging or chat rooms. There are two main methods of filtering content: by URL or by keyword. URL filtering blocks a web site based on its address. Filtering by URL can be difficult because of the fluid nature of the Internet. Lists of offensive web sites can be obtained through various means, and must be updated often. Keyword filtering blocks a web page if it contains certain offensive or restricted keywords.
